Inside My Skin
16 mm/ 24P, Color, 16 minutes, 2007
Generations of grandmothers, daughters and granddaughters filter through life trying to not become the woman who raised them—but we still so often relive the same mistakes, or become the same women without control. We say we will never be like our mothers, and yet when we hit a certain age, we realize there are some things we just can't control. They are a part of us—deeper than our bones, filtering through our blood—our mothers live inside our skin and it is almost impossible to get them out. At an age where I am quickly discovering my mother in me, my question becomes: why do we try so hard not to become our mothers? And then, after such a struggle, why do we still become them and continue to reject most personality parts that is just heritage passed down? inside my skin is a personal documentary about three generations of mothers and daughters and examines the generational gap and questions the shared traits between a mother and a daughter that both connect and disconnect women within a family.
